Now that the campaign is done, the ABIA/IMO States Association election in New Jersey brought out the good, the bad, and the ugly in the characters of our people.  Some stayed on the issues, while others went out of the issues.  As much as ego has been a part of this campaign, the relationship of PDP New Jersey played out at ABIA/IMO.  The characters of the contestants have been examined, turned inside out, upside down, and what we did not know before about the participants is now known.  Some truths, some half truths, some outright fabrications have all played out in the field. There have been charges and counter chargers from both camps.

Looking at the race, there are actually three contested positions in this contest: the Presidency, Social Director, and the Public Relations Officer.  Of the presidency, there were initially three candidates: Chief Rowland Anyanwu, locked horns with Mr. Chucks Asoluka, and Mr. Ethelbert Oleka. A debate was scheduled at Blessed Sacrament in Newark, but a saboteur pulled the alarm.  It was then rescheduled for November 25th at the Sheraton Four Points in Elizabeth, where there was better security at this hotel rather than at the church.  Midway during the candidate’s debate an alarm was once again pulled there as well however, the debate was held against all odds.  At the debate, the President of the organization gave a warning to all other saboteurs hiding in the shadows. After the debate of November 25, 2007, Mr. Ethelbert Oleka dropped out of the race and threw his support to Mr. Asoluka.

According to one of the youths, the elders ate their breakfast, they have eaten their lunch, they have eaten their dinner but they should not eat our breakfast lunch or dinner.
For the position of social director, the candidates’ characters were examined inside and out.  And now the die is cast.  For the other elective positions of Financial Secretary, Treasurer etc., there is no contest.
This election has presented the image of Igbos in New Jersey in the best and the worst light.
The election will start at 2 pm and end promptly at 5: 30 pm.  As in every campaign, on Election Day, voter turn out is important.  This morning there is snow.  One vote can make a big difference.  The position of an elected official is to serve the people, but it seems that as much as ego is at play, people are really fighting to be on top of a big mass of people, not to serve.  They may claim that they will work to serve the people by all means possible, but let’s take a look at the position.  It does not pay, so what is in it for the contestants?  So let us ask why both camps are spending so much money on a nonprofit position.

Character strikes and material damages also took place. First the Van of the wife of Chief Rowland Anyanwu was stolen at Blessed Sacrament lot in Newark, now we read that the Lexus of Mr. Bright Olakpo a strong supporter of Mr. Chuck Asoluka, was vandalized at the same venue. What is going on here? Umu Igbo were nu nwayo na atu okute.
As was previously written in Igbo Basics Quarterly, “The funny thing about these Igbo organizations is that when you go to the meetings, instead of coming out of the meeting with one new friend, you come out with five new enemies”.  First it was ABIA/IMO, next it was Abia Association, now it is ISCA and many more to come.  The organizations continue to multiply.  Why is this multiplication happening?  In our view, one group of people set out to control a group of people and when they cannot do that, they break away to form a new organization and it continues over and over again
Where will this stop?  If the Igbos in Diaspora, cannot organize themselves properly how can they hope to make a change in their homeland.  But one thing that we can see in this election is a strong demand for transparency.  We see that after some people serve, they continue to hover in the background.  Wouldn’t it be nice to be free from previous organization?

AISANA Election:
The Rules Necessities and Nuisances

by: Nnamdi Obasi

No one likes a referee who also wants to play the game.  Politicians may be good candidates, they may have good views, good morals, and good stands on important issues, yet they still may not be the candidates you want to be your leaders.  Their behavior is a good way to judge their character and an indicator of how they will rule.  When you look at a politician during his political debate and see him calling fouls on his opponents, you know that this isn’t the person you want to vote for.

Kids in school don’t condone this type of behavior either.  You may see kids playing a little sport out in the schoolyard but they think as you think all the same.  During their game, when they find players who continuously see fit to reference the rules, argue with other players and authorities on whether or not the calls were fair, and generally stall in an attempt to keep themselves on the court, kids take a general disliking to the protesting players.  Other players may have enough contempt that they will set their differences aside long enough to team up and box out the protestor who relies on the technicalities to hurt and slow down the game.
The same applies to politicians.  They rely on their technicalities to say, “Hey, my opponent can’t do that.  His actions generate from the people a view that leaves me at a disadvantage,” or something else minor.  This shows that the politician knows the rules well, but the rules aren’t necessarily the most important factor more so than actually winning.  In court, technicalities are important because the tiniest one can win the trial, but in politics the tiniest technicalities do not make a difference to the public.  Sometimes, the rules are ignored and someone gets cheated, but it’s what happens here in America.  Not everything is fair, and yet they who decide to reference the rules try to get the referee to side against their opponents.  This kind of inactivity, just letting the rules handle every little situation you come across, not only earns you contempt from your opponents, but it also generates a negative image towards the public.

If you are always relying on the honor system to get you through things, in times of crisis or war when decisions need to be made quickly, most people would believe that you would still be referencing law codes on what to do.  There is also to consider that when you must oppose the violent or expansionist intent of other countries and enemies that they will not always play by the rules.  Playing by the rules in a situation like that could leave you at a serious disadvantage from your opponent and cause you to lose control of the situation.

Though people want a leader who takes things into careful consideration, they do not want someone who will second-guess himself at the most crucial of moments.  Aside from that, if you are talking to the public in a debate and you call fouls on your opponent constantly, you’re just stating the obvious.  The people are informed on the topic, which is why they listen to the debates in the first place.  If another candidate is stating something wrong or false, you can rebuke him or her, refute his or her arguments and propose a solution of you own.  The people don’t need you to tell them all the time.  They’ll know when a candidate is cheating or lying.  Pointing this out just goes to show more easily that the honest candidate cannot handle the situation.  At a time like this, pointing out so many mistakes and lies would be as bad as political slander.  Just go through without cheating and don’t let anything sound too good to be true because that is what should always get the cheaters.
Lastly, not everyone knows of all the rules, just the ones of immediate importance.  Referencing rules that people do not know and have never heard of makes you sound too good to be true.  Consequentially, your credibility will be severely crippled.

In conclusion, there are two types of candidates, the ones that win honestly and the ones that cheat, lie, and make mistakes.  Think carefully on who you’d choose in the next election that you vote in.  Remember some candidates are dishonest, but they have efficiency on their side.

Coalition ploitics and privatization of WIC

JOS Okeke

In the beginning the concept of WIC was an organization that it was hoped would encompass as many Ndigbo in the diaspora as possible. An organization where as many people as possible could pool their numbers, resources, knowledge and exposure to improve the lot of Ndigbo both at home and in their various places of abode. This would have required free flow of information, ideas and opinions to arrive at a decision that as many people as possible would sign up to and support. Alas, this is not the case. WIC of today has been “privatized”.  Decisions in WIC, in the name of all Ndigbo in diaspora, indeed the entire affairs of WIC is now handled by, may be, two or three individuals: not by the executive council as defined by the constitution, not even by the full compliment of WIC elected officials (their ranks have been decimated because as we speak, WIC does not have an active Vice chair and public relations officer for more than two years)
The HOD has been rendered meaningless irrelevance and has become nothing but passengers in WIC affairs. A handful of individuals decide what is what in the constitution and not what you and I can read and interpret  by our selves. Agenda for board meetings are published just a few days before the meetings and the minutes of such meetings are not made public until a week before the next meeting, three months later. The affiliates and the general membership who are really the owners of WIC have been denied any part in what is, after all, their organization in which they pay dues.
The question is how on earth did we get to this point. This all started in 1999 when a coalition was formed to win election. The coalition was how Dr. Diogu came from nowhere to become the Vice chair after having attended only one board teleconference. The rest of the story is familiar to all who have followed or cared about WIC. One coalition has led to another and another. We are getting the same results because we are continuing to do the same thing.  There is nothing wrong with having a team of people who have the same ideology or who can work together, but not for them to constitute themselves into a club of see nothing, do nothing, hear nothing, criticize nothing, say nothing and agree to everything. Abandoning and forgetting that they represent a group in their affiliates and that ultimately and in the final analysis they are answerable to those who put them where they are. If WIC is not “privatized”, how can any one explain the recent actions by a handful of the officials and indeed a whole series of lapses and violations of the constitution without as much of a whisper of complaint by the rest of the board members or indeed the vast majority of those who are in a position to comment? Is it that we are not serious about what we are doing or is it that we are incapable of focusing on issues or afraid to speak up? If the recent letter of the temporary withdrawal of Chicago and the matter relating to the position of the legal adviser were not important enough to warrant a serious and open and frank discussion in the recently held board meeting, I wonder what is. To make matters worse, the secretary had the effrontery to write to suspend Houston from her rights and privileges in WIC in violation of a US court order without the luxury of any input by the board of directors; even if they had to hold an emergency teleconference. This action is not only unconstitutional but ultravires and could well amount to contempt of court. That this has not provoked a serious outcry, revulsion and protest from board members, not to speak of HOD can only be attributed to coalition politics.

Ndigbo ibem, in a way, I think it is a good thing that we are living through these experiences, so that we could all wake up and learn. We should stop wondering how Obasanjo was able to be a dictator and run the country like his private fife.  I think it is time that we “Nationalized” WIC again to serve the needs of the people. The original WIC constitution had some problems that needed to be fixed but instead it was turned into an instrument to serve some interests. I have always maintained that people who review, or write constitution should never have ambition or be allowed to hold office under that constitution because invariably they write their personal interests into that constitution. American constitution is no exception.
With all its shortcomings, WIC still has tremendous potential to serve our people both here and at home. First we have to re Nationalize her not by replacing one coalition with another but by putting in office those who will do the peoples business and putting in place mechanism to remove with utmost dispatch any erring official. This is what serious people and organizations do. Getting involved is about the surest way to help effect changes rather lobbing grenade from across the fence.
