Exciting times in Nigeria

For the first time in over 50 years the ruling party in Nigeria lost an election. What made the loss even more historical was the speed with which President Goodluck Jonathan conceded and congratulated the President elect General Muhamad Buhari. Ivory Coast once considered a stable democracy had an election and the incumbent refused to concede. It took the efforts of the UN, countless lost lives and a war before the elected leader could assume his office. Past leaders have tried to stretch their tenure. The gentleman from Otuoke true to his word, will step down in May.

Nigeria has passed a milestone. For the first time, the will of the people trumped the desires of the ruling class. The people who were once content to be thrown crumbs by the ruling elite now desire a place at the table. It bodes well for Nigeria. There is power in PVC and they (Nigerians) exercised it. Congratulations. Bravo Nigeria.

On our Facebook page we got this message after the election results were announced. (There will not be need for this again so thank you so much. Mr solar.) The challenges facing the incoming administration are sentiments such as this expressed by the populace, the belief that all the problems that Nigeria has will be solved immediately by the new president and his administration. I would not want to be the ruling party or President of Nigeria with such weighty expectations from the citizens.

The facts about electricity are sobering. Sub Saharan Africa generates a little over 70,000 Megawatts of electricity. South Africa produces about 48,000 of that and suffers chronic blackouts. Nigeria over the last 20 years has generated between 3000 and 4500 MW. With a population of over 177 million, Nigeria needs over 100,000 MW to match South Africa. Which means we sill still have blackouts. The capital needed to fund such a massive build out is staggering. Nigeria has a per capita consumption of electricity of 149 kw/h. Compare that to France at 7292. The cost to Nigerians of self generation is about $1.30 vs $0.12 per kw/h in the developed world. Economic activity is not sustainable with such rates.

The solution has to include renewables like Hydro, Wind and Solar. It is actually cheaper to deploy solar to remote areas than it costs to bring the grid. Advances in storage will continue to make solar competitive with the grid. The US installed more solar power in one month than Nigeria produced from the grid.
Our hope is that the incoming government will develop a national solution that will provide homeowners with financial or tax incentives to install solar power in their homes. Instead of a fuel subsidy the money should be spent on credits for installing renewable energy options in your home or business.

Update from US.
Within the next two weeks we hope to be back in Nigeria installing systems for our clients. We thank all of you that have waited patiently for our return. Our service team in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Umuikaa have been doing a phenomenal job. Please thank Taiwo Giwa, Pastor Chris Okoye, Ugochukwu Ukaegbu and Oliver Nwosu when next they visit with you for the fantastic job they continue to do for you and our company.

We have set up a test facility in our New Jersey office. We will test and try every new system we will install in Nigeria here first. It gives us a better control of quality and saves us time when we come to your home.
We will be installing an off grid system in the office as well. We will get to live like you. Run on solar for as long as we can. New Jersey has a large amount of cloudy days so it will be a fun exercise. We will be using what we sell to you in Nigeria here. The installation will be detailed and a video made. We are applying for permits and approval from the town. Most of the work will be done and supervised by El Presidente himself (new nickname I coined for myself).

We got our first set of batteries delivered by NorthEast batteries and we thank them profusely, Frank has been a champion. We intend to use them as we build inventory of batteries in Nigeria.

A plane has been flying around the world powered by the sun. If we can fly a plane around the world using the power of the sun, the connecting your home should be a piece of cake. Call us today. 01 404 1003  or 0702 300 1008

Thank you for reading and we will be seeing you in Asaba, Port Harcourt, Aba, Orlu and Lagos very soon.
