Big 80s for Mazi Ukonu
The legendary Mazi Ukonu of Ukonu’s Club fame turned 80 years old on March 5, 2010. A special celebration to honor this icon of Nigerian broadcast industry was held at Onu Ibina Igbere on April 3, 2010. Highlights of the month-long celebration featured, amongst other things, A film montage Big 80s with footage from 1953 " White Witch Doctor and 1955 Untamed was screened at the event. A book on the life and times of Chief, Mazi, Anyaogu Elekwachi Ukonu was also unvailed. The book, entitled, Journey from Medicine to Theatre Arts is a biography of Mazi Ukonu as compiled by Chief Alexander Iheke (Opiegbe) and published by MediaWorks, LLC, USA. Digniteries at the event included Assistant Inspector General of Police, Mr Azubuike Udah and representatives of Abia State Government. Chief Robert Udeagha of Bundi Nigeria Ltd and Chief Kalu Ogbonna from Kano supported the event by ordering books to be placed at the Libraries of various institutions. Professor Mike Ijioma, Vice Chancellor at Abia State University reviewed the book. Mr. Ibu, Onye Army and other artists lead the celebration. Culturaly, Ohamadike Int. War Dance from old Bende dazzled the audience with their electrifying performance.
